What Does Real Love Look Like? A Faith Perspective on Lasting Love
By Malissa Shanece McIntosh | P-Cube Inspirations
We live in a world that is obsessed with love and deeply confused about what it actually is.
We fall in love, fall out of love, chase love, lose love, and wonder why it never quite looks the way we imagined. We have been shaped by movies, music, and social media to expect love to feel a certain way — and when it does not, we assume something is wrong with us or with the person we chose.
But the Bible offers a completely different picture of love. One that is less about feeling and more about choosing. Less about what you receive and more about what you give. Less about the perfect person and more about becoming one.
Here is what real, lasting love actually looks like — through a faith lens.
Love Is a Decision, Not Just a Feeling
Feelings are real. But feelings are also temporary. They rise and fall with circumstances, with seasons, with moods. If love is only a feeling, it will not survive the hard seasons — and every relationship has hard seasons.
The love the Bible describes is not passive. It is active, intentional, and chosen — repeatedly.
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs." — 1 Corinthians 13:4–5 (NIV)
Read that list again. Patience. Kindness. Humility. Forgiveness. None of those are feelings — they are choices. Lasting love is built on daily decisions to choose the other person even when it is not easy.
Real Love Requires Knowing Yourself First
You cannot love well from a place of emptiness. Many of us enter relationships hoping the other person will complete us, heal us, or give us the identity we have not yet found in God. That is too much weight for any human being to carry.
Lasting love begins with knowing who you are in Christ — your worth, your identity, your wholeness — before you look for it in another person. When you are secure in God's love for you, you are free to love others without desperation or demand.
"We love because he first loved us." — 1 John 4:19 (NIV)
God's love is the model and the source. Everything else flows from there.
What Lasting Love Actually Looks Like
It is not the grand gesture. It is the ordinary faithfulness.
It is showing up on the hard days. It is choosing kindness when you are tired. It is saying sorry first. It is listening when you would rather be heard. It is staying when leaving would be easier.
Lasting love is not dramatic — it is consistent. And consistency, over time, builds something that feelings alone never could.
"Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins." — 1 Peter 4:8 (NIV)
Deep love is not blind to imperfection — it chooses to extend grace in spite of it. That is what makes it lasting.
Three Practical Ways to Cultivate Lasting Love
1. Pray for the people you love. Interceding for someone regularly changes how you see them. It is hard to hold bitterness toward someone you are actively bringing before God.
2. Choose curiosity over assumption. When conflict arises, ask questions before drawing conclusions. Most misunderstandings are rooted in assumptions, not reality.
3. Speak love in the language the other person receives it. Love expressed in a way the other person cannot receive is love that goes unfelt. Learn how the people in your life feel most loved — and love them that way.

Real love is not found in the perfect moment. It is built in the ordinary ones — chosen, again and again, by grace.
