How to Pray When You Don't Know What to Say
By Malissa Shanece McIntosh | P-Cube Inspirations
There are moments when prayer feels impossible. Not because you do not believe — but because you do not have the words. The situation is too heavy, too complicated, or too raw. You sit down to pray and nothing comes. Or everything comes at once and none of it feels like enough.
If you have ever stared at the ceiling wondering how to begin, this is for you.
Prayer was never meant to be a performance. It was never meant to be polished or perfect. It is a conversation — and like any conversation, it can begin simply, honestly, and imperfectly.
Here is how to pray when you do not know what to say.
Start With Honesty
"The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth." — Psalm 145:18 (NIV)
You do not have to pretend with God. He already knows what you are feeling — He is simply waiting for you to bring it to Him. If you are angry, say so. If you are confused, say so. If all you can manage is "God, I don't know what to say"— that is a prayer. And He hears it.
Honesty is not disrespectful in prayer. It is the foundation of intimacy.
Use Scripture as Your Starting Point
When your own words fail, borrow God's. The Psalms in particular are full of raw, honest prayers that cover every human emotion — grief, fear, joy, confusion, praise, and desperation.
"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?" — Psalm 22:1 (NIV)
If David could pray that, you can pray whatever is on your heart. Open the Psalms and read one out loud as your prayer. Let Scripture give language to what you cannot express on your own.
Try this: When you do not know how to pray, open to Psalm 23, 34, or 91 and read it slowly as a personal prayer to God.
Pray in Fragments
Prayer does not have to be long. It does not have to be structured. Some of the most powerful prayers are the shortest ones.
- "Help me."
- "I trust you."
- "Thank you."
- "I don't understand, but I choose you."
"In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans." — Romans 8:26 (NIV)
When you do not have words, the Holy Spirit intercedes on your behalf. You are never truly without a voice before God.
Pray With Your Body
Sometimes prayer begins not with words but with posture. Kneel. Open your hands. Lift your face. Put on worship music and simply sit in God's presence without saying anything at all.
Silence before God is not the absence of prayer — it is one of its deepest forms.
Try this: Set a timer for five minutes. Put on a worship song, sit quietly, and simply be present with God. No agenda. No words required.
Return to the Lord's Prayer
When all else fails, Jesus gave us a template.
"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one." — Matthew 6:9–13 (NIV)
Pray it slowly. Pause at each line. Let it become a framework for everything you want to say but cannot find words for.
