5 Signs God Is Calling You to Lead

Leadership is one of those words that can feel both compelling and terrifying at the same time.
Compelling because somewhere deep inside, you sense there is more — more purpose, more impact, more of what God placed you here to do. Terrifying because leadership means stepping forward, being seen, and taking responsibility for something beyond yourself.
Many women who are called to lead spend years waiting — for more confidence, more qualifications, more permission. But God rarely calls the fully prepared. He calls the willing and equips them along the way.
If you have been wondering whether God is calling you to lead, here are five signs to pay attention to.
1. People Naturally Come to You
You may not have a title. You may not have a platform. But people find their way to you — for advice, for perspective, for encouragement, for direction. They trust you with things they do not share with everyone.
This is not coincidence. It is a pattern — and patterns reveal purpose.
"The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out." — Proverbs 18:15 (NIV)
When people consistently seek your counsel, pay attention. God may be showing you something about how He has wired you.
2. You See What Others Miss
Leaders carry a particular kind of vision. They walk into a room and see not just what is, but what could be. They notice the gap between the current reality and a better one — and they feel compelled to do something about it.
If you regularly find yourself thinking this could be better or someone should do something about this — consider that the someone might be you.
"Where there is no vision, the people perish." — Proverbs 29:18 (KJV)
Vision is a gift. And it comes with responsibility.
3. You Feel a Restlessness You Cannot Explain
There is a holy discontent that God places in the hearts of those He is calling forward. It is not dissatisfaction for its own sake — it is a stirring. A sense that you were made for more than where you currently are.
If you have been feeling restless, unsettled, or quietly hungry for something you cannot quite name — do not dismiss it. Bring it to God in prayer and ask Him what He is preparing you for.
"For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfil his good purpose." — Philippians 2:13 (NIV)
That restlessness may be God at work in you.
4. You Have Been Through Something
The most effective leaders are rarely those who have had it easy. They are the ones who have walked through difficulty, found God faithful in it, and come out the other side with something to offer.
Your story — the hard parts especially — is not a disqualifier. It is part of your preparation. The very things you have survived are what give you credibility, compassion, and authority to lead others through similar terrain.
"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God." — 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 (NIV)
Your pain has a purpose. Your testimony has power.
5. You Keep Coming Back to the Same Calling
You have tried to ignore it. You have talked yourself out of it. You have told yourself you are not ready, not qualified, not the right person. And yet — it keeps coming back.
That persistent pull is worth taking seriously. God is patient and He is persistent. If He has placed something on your heart repeatedly, He has not changed His mind about it.
"For God's gifts and his call are irrevocable." — Romans 11:29 (NIV)
