What Does the Bible Say About Rest? A Woman's Guide

We live in a culture that glorifies busy. But God invented rest before He invented work.

On the seventh day, God rested — not because He was tired, but because rest is holy. It was His idea. And yet for many women, rest feels like a luxury they haven't earned, a reward waiting at the end of a to-do list that never ends.

This post is an invitation to reconsider everything you think you know about rest.

What the Bible Actually Says

Matthew 11:28–30 — "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Jesus doesn't say "finish your list and then come." He says come now, as you are, weary and all. Rest is not a reward — it is a gift offered to the exhausted.

Psalm 23:2 — "He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters." Notice the word makes. Sometimes God has to lead us to rest because we won't go on our own. The shepherd doesn't ask the sheep if they'd like to rest. He leads them there.

Exodus 20:8–10 — The Sabbath commandment is not a suggestion. It is one of the Ten Commandments — placed alongside "do not murder" and "do not steal." God takes rest that seriously. Why don't we?

Isaiah 40:31 — "Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles." Renewal requires stopping. You cannot be renewed while running.

3 Kinds of Rest the Bible Points To

  • Physical rest — sleep, stillness, Sabbath. Your body is not a machine. It was made from dust and it needs to return to stillness regularly.

  • Spiritual rest — ceasing from striving to earn God's approval. Hebrews 4 speaks of entering God's rest — a rest from the exhausting work of trying to be enough.

  • Emotional rest — casting your anxiety on Him (1 Peter 5:7). Worry is the opposite of rest. Surrender is the doorway to it.

A Practical Invitation

This week, choose one form of rest and protect it like an appointment. Put your phone down for one hour. Take a walk without a podcast. Sit with your tea and your Bible and nothing else on the agenda.

Rest is not laziness. It is obedience.
